PricewaterhouseCoopers Gap Year Programme

Make the most of your Gap Year with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC)

PricewaterhouseCoopers; you may have noticed that we have an exceptionally long name but that aside, who are we?

You may have heard of PwC, but you may not know that we are one of the world's largest professional services firms. Essentially, professional services is about using our knowledge and expertise to provide advice and services to clients. We work with a wide variety of clients, so you could find yourself working with a Premiership football club, the British government, a top fashion house or even a music TV channel. Our 130,000 people work in 148 countries, helping with just about anything our clients need. This could involve conducting audits of their company results, giving them tax advice, or pointers on how to manage their risks more effectively.

The wide range of individual services this encompasses is divided into four main service areas; Assurance, Advisory, Actuarial, Tax. Whichever business area you join, you will be working in a professional environment and constantly learning more about your chosen area and the business as a whole. We'll provide ongoing training and development to progress your career.

How can you see the world and build your CV whilst on your Gap year?

By taking a Gap placement with PwC that’s how. You want to have a productive year out and gain that all important work experience, but at PwC we understand that you want to take some time out to explore the world or make a difference in it.

Our Gap Year placements allow you to do both. During the seven-month paid placement you will join one of our client teams and take on real work and real responsibilities meaning that during the placement you can build an impressive mix of business and personal skills and create an enhanced CV. As the placements are only for 7 months it leaves you plenty of time to carry out voluntary work or go travelling before starting university in the autumn. The placements are paid so you also have plenty of time to save up for that once in a lifetime trip!

We don’t just throw our Gap students in at the deep end

We expect our ‘gappers’ to perform the same role as our graduates, so we ensure that you have the same quality training as they do. An introductory training week kicks off the start of the placement. You will get to grips with all the technical, business and IT skills which you need to make your placement successful. That might sound like a lot of hard work, but we make sure there’s time for some fun and relaxation during the evenings! The training doesn’t end there; in fact something that you will learn is that training is ongoing at PwC. Each student is assigned a Buddy and a Career Coach to help them settle in and start planning their career goals and to help them develop during the placements. We also run a series of national training days where our students choose the topics to work on and even help deliver some parts of the training.

The relationship doesn’t have to end here

The Gap placement scholarship means that it can be the start of a long term relationship which can run until you graduate from university and beyond, which means that you get excellent work experience and £1,500 financial support throughout each of your academic years at university.

At university the Gap students are asked to be campus ambassadors. This means that you will be invited along to PwC reception evenings or skills sessions so that you can share your gap year experiences with other students, you may also like to nominate university societies with which we can be involved through events or sponsorship.

Many of our former gap year students return to PwC after they graduate, so it could in fact be the beginning of a long-term relationship with us!

Getting down to the nitty gritty - what will you get out of this relationship?

You will have a challenging and professional paid gap placement but to summarise:
- Seven month competitively paid gap year placement
- Excellent training and ongoing development opportunities
- £1,500 scholarship for each year at university
- Campus ambassador role whilst at university
- Further paid placements throughout university
- A long term relationship with one of the worlds largest professional services firms
- The opportunity to work with and learn from some of the best business advisors in the world

Where can I become a PwC Gapper?

We recruit approximately 55 students each year into our offices throughout Central London, the South East, South West England, Midlands and Wales. Students join our client teams in Assurance & Audit, Tax, Forensic Services and Actuarial, and we give them plenty of real work and real responsibilities along the way.

Once you have submitted your application, our team will review it, and if we like what we see and you meet our academic requirements (you should be aiming for 300 UCAS points or higher across 3 A Levels excluding general studies), we’ll invite you to attend an Assessment Day. During the day you will have an interview which will last for no more than an hour, you will be asked about things that you’ve discussed on your application form, as well as more general questions about current affairs and your future career plans. You will also take part in a group discussion exercise and complete some ability tests - verbal, numerical and logical reasoning. If you do well on the Assessment Day we’ll invite you back for a final interview with someone more senior. After that, we’ll let you know the outcome within a few days.
