Summer jobs fruit-picking in Denmark Not sure what to do with yourself this summer? If you want to travel and make international friends but your bank account contains nothing but two moths and a dust-ball, why not do some seasonal work abroad? The beauty of the big, happy family that is the European Union is that it allows you to work in many European countries, including Denmark, without applying for a work permit. Each summer, in June and July, Denmark’s farmers take on hundreds of jordbærplukkers. That’s strawberry pickers, to you and me. If you like the thought of working outdoors and living with people from all over Europe, and if you think you can resist eating everything you pick, jordbærplukking could be for you. You’ll most likely live in a tent on a campsite or farmer’s field, with cooking, bathing and toilet facilities on hand. You’ll probably also have access to a living room with a TV and space to relax. Accommodation is often free (check before you commit yourself), which means you can save what you earn (or spend it on Danish pastries and Carlsberg). The real attraction is the setting and the social life. If you apply through Exis, for example, you’ll be working on the beautiful island of Samsø, with its 7000 km of beaches. You’ll be able to enjoy them as you’ll often have your afternoons free. Above all, you’ll be living in a truly international community, with all the chances that offers for expanding your range of multilingual chat-up lines. However, it’s not a holiday. You’ll sign a contract, which generally lasts between three and six weeks, and you’ll work hard for your money: it’s piecework, which means you’re paid by the kilo, not by the hour You can expect to start early in the morning and to work for six or seven days a week. It’s tiring, physical work and you’re usually expected to carry on plucking if it rains. Still interested? If so, now’s the time to apply.
